As part of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary celebrations, a section of the A10 ring road was transformed into a temporary forest on 21 June 2025. The “Birthday Forest” featured 750 large trees and 7,500 smaller ones, creating a striking green oasis where visitors could wander and enjoy a vibrant cultural program.

The project of the Birthday Forest showcased immediately the vital role urban greenery plays in cooling cities and enhancing liveability. With the warm weather that day it was a popular spot to cool down. For the event, 65 trailers of trees were transported from the Olympic Stadium and installed along the highway.

That evening on NOS News, Tom van den Wijngaard, founder of Mobile Forestry, shared insights into the cooling effects of trees and their ability to improve comfort in dense urban environments. On site, he continued his research on how greenery influences perceived temperatures and supports healthier cities.

About Mobile Forestry

Founded in 2023, Mobile Forestry is redefining how trees are planted and managed in metropolitan areas. Traditional urban forestry often struggles to bring trees to maturity due to ongoing development pressures. In response, Tom developed the Mobile Forestry Strategy, a dynamic approach in which trees are strategically relocated as they grow, ensuring they can thrive in the right place at the right time.

Tom on Mobile forestry: ‘’At Mobile Forestry, we see trees as living works of art, growing organisms that reflect the seasons and the passage of time. We believe that the health and beauty of the urban forest mirror the biophilia of communities and nations. By highlighting these symbiotic relationships and fostering collective care, Mobile Forestry works toward a shared goal: to expand urban canopy cover through innovation and strengthen the resilience of urban forests, preparing our cities for future heatwaves and climate challenges.’’

Mobile Forestry is one of the ventures supported by the BK-Launch community. We are proud to share their progress and continue to celebrate the innovative work of our ventures.
