“The main goal is to transform the way we design our built environment to become regenerative and natural.”
— Urban Reef
Status: launched
Urban Reef aims to develop applied structures in the urban environment that enhance ecological potential. Algorithms that are inspired by certain natural morphogenetic processes enable us to develop geometrically complex structures. This results in relation to the environment in a high diversity of conditions and microclimates, which is beneficial for the local ecology.
The company emerged from a series of experiments in printing with living materials and explorations in computational design strategies for ecological purposes. The results of these experiments and the attention they gained made us explore the potential of the strategies for scaling, applying and commercializing to create an actual impact. The main goal is to transform the way we design our built environment to become regenerative and natural.
Entrepreneurship for me is about having an ambition and ensuring all necessary steps to realize it are executed. This also means developing a critical perspective on what is required, including yourself.
The built environment is a very conservative world. We still build the way we did a hundred years ago and innovation is slow. The current challenges are enormous though, and will not likely emerge from the status quo. (Impact-) Entrepreneurship in the built environment is therefore essential.
