Alexander on Studio for Change

During my first year at the TU Delft, I took part in the Xtreme course, which focuses on architecture in extreme environments with little to no resources. This course brought me to Sint Maarten in the Caribbean. It was the first time I witnessed the impact of the Western-inspired architecture typology in the global south.

During my stay, I realized the invasive characteristics of this typology to the cultural context and unresponsiveness to the local climate and landscape. This set me on a path of developing architecture that considers the local environment, culture and needs of people.

Through my work in the Caribbean, I got the opportunity to travel to India for three months, where I spent most of my time in Assam in the Northeast of India. I used this time to develop my thinking into a methodology, which I call Contemporary Contextual Architecture.

With the help of BK-Launch, I was able to translate my ideas into an entrepreneurial vision and Studio for Change was born.

Studio for Change designs timeless eco-friendly spaces by blending traditional architecture, local materials, and modern techniques. We collaborate with experts in the field and conduct independent research to convince customers and local authorities to embrace eco-friendly solutions. Our mission is to raise awareness of the beauty and viability of traditional building methods. As part of our effort, we also created Build for Change, an NGO that helps educational institutions in underserved communities create climate awareness and improve their learning environment by co-creating vital buildings using Studio for Change's vision. We aim to reveal the harm of the Western-led idea of progress and highlight the potential of the land and people.

Alexander on entrepreneurship

To me, entrepreneurship means the freedom to pursue your own vision, to create meaningful change and to challenge the status quo. In the built environment, fostering entrepreneurial spirit is crucial because it empowers individuals to innovate and create spaces that not only meet client and stakeholder needs but also drive the industry toward more sustainable, ecologically responsible practices.

It’s about designing solutions that are rooted in the unique culture, environment and resources of a place, ensuring that what we build today genuinely belongs to and benefits its context tomorrow.
